About the award
Designing for diversity, equity & Inclusion
In order to improve the quality of higher education in The Netherlands, higher education institutions make agreements with students and lecturers through the national ‘Kwaliteitsafspraken’.
Diversity Equity and Inclusion are crucial for the quality of education, as they support epistemic justice: the idea that knowledge production must be inclusive, that knowledge produced from a variety of perspectives is more innovative and where the production of knowledge recognises and values diverse life stories and experiences.
The societal relevance is straightforward. Dutch society and the world at large are increasingly more diverse. Future architects, urbanists, planners, managers and engineers must address the needs of a multitude of stakeholders who have different needs and aspirations. This award aims to highlight work being done by students at BOUWKUNDE (the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment), TPM (Technology Policy Managements) and IO (Industria Design) of the Delft University of Technology. These schools are included in this programme as a pilot. In the future, other units at TU Delft are expected to join. Please read the page on eligibility to see if you can apply.
The Award
10 Finalists will be invited to develop a public talk
10 finalists will be invited to develop a short talk with coaching from a specialist from IMPROVE Technical and Creative Production https://www.improve.nl/en/ and will be invited to present these talks in a special ceremony at the end of MARCH 2023.
This talk will be recorded and made available in a specially dedicated website.
All finalists will receive a gift from TU Delft and the opportunity to develop a talk with a professional coach and recording, and to have their work featured in a website, as well as disseminated throughout TU Delft. The winners will be awarded €1,500 each (one prize for Master’s thesis and one for PhD dissertations). Runners-up and honourable mentions will be awarded as well.
With this initiative, we intend to raise awareness about design for diversity and to build up a collection of good examples of thesis, methodologies, tools, and perspectives that promote diversity, equity and inclusion in design.
